The SPARC Alliance is a pioneering initiative led by Pembrokeshire College to bridge the gap between education and industry in the rapidly evolving low-carbon and renewable energy sectors. The SPARC Alliance is supported by RWE, Blue Gem Wind, Ledwood Engineering and the Port of Milford Haven, Swansea City Deal and Pembrokeshire County Council. The SPARC Alliance was formed in response to the pressing need to encourage more females into non-traditional career pathways and to prepare an inclusive workforce for the Celtic Freeport region. This first year pilot has engaged with over 800 learners and has recruited 172 females to the project for regular engagement.

“This project is a strong partnership between business and Further Education that will develop the future workforce by creating the awareness of the opportunities that are on the horizon within Pembrokeshire and the South West Wales region. This project will be focusing on encouraging females to consider careers within the energy and construction sectors and we hope to see many more females taking up the opportunities that will be created across the region”. Jane Lewis, Regional Learning Partnership Manager.

At its core, SPARC is not just a programme but a shared commitment to reframing the narrative around energy careers. Rather than focusing solely on 'net zero' and green jobs, SPARC encourages students and employers to think in terms of transferable skills, energy security, and inclusive access to future opportunities. By doing so, it helps young people, particularly 12–18-year-olds, better understand how their interests and attributes align with a broad range of careers—from traditional energy to offshore wind and hydrogen technologies.

Dr Rob Hillier, 14-19 Adviser at Pembrokeshire County Council states “The SPARC project is a ground-breaking initiative partnering industry, schools and Pembrokeshire College. It has had a clear impact on raising aspiration amongst our young females by delivering information, advice and guidance around career opportunities in transitional and low carbon energy industries. We hope to challenge gender stereotypes, and to build confidence in pursuing STEM and related career pathways.”
