The Swansea Bay City Deal Skills and Talent Programme offers an opportunity for organisations to access funding for innovative pilot projects aimed at upskilling the regional workforce for the future. With a focus on developing new qualifications and industry driven training frameworks, the programme supports innovative pilot projects that run over a two-year period. Several early-stage pilots have now successfully completed their journeys, producing impressive outputs and stories worth celebrating.
Pembrokeshire Passport to Employment
This multi-award-winning initiative saw Pembrokeshire College join forces with renewable energy businesses to establish a Blue-Green Energy framework. The project introduced children and young adults to careers in the renewables sector and was taught collaboratively across schools, industry and the college.
- 30 qualifications completed
- 3 new/updated frameworks developed
- 1,350 learners received training

Low Carbon Net Zero Awareness Raising
Led by Cyfle, this region-wide programme addressed the growing skills need in low carbon construction. Working with schools and colleges, it introduced learners to net zero technologies, delivering outstanding impact:
- 164 new jobs created
- 157 apprenticeships supported
- 1,124 individuals gaining additional skills

Gowerton Comprehensive School led this innovative health science initiative in Swansea schools, blending technology and wellbeing education. The programme successfully engaged:
Careers in the Digital Sector
With leadership from Neath & Port Talbot Council and support from academic and industry partners, this digital careers project equipped learners for roles in the creative and technology sectors. Achievements include:
- 183 learners gaining qualifications
- 2,320 individuals actively engaged in the project

NOW Skills – Net Zero Wales
Led by Swansea University, this project was designed to address the green skills gap in manufacturing, NOW Skills delivered micro-credential courses to support career progression in the public and private sectors. The pilot exceeded targets, achieving:
- 83 qualifications earned
- 4 new jobs generated
- 9 new frameworks developed

How Green Was My Valley
This innovative digital upskilling pilot trained teachers and PGCE students using the popular Minecraft platform, embedding STEM and net zero themes into classrooms. The project achieved:
- 270 teachers and support staff upskilled
- 40 PGCE students trained in digital construction and energy-focused education
