Future Skills for Land & Sea

The introduction of the Warsash Maritime School Pre-Cadetship at Pembrokeshire College has provided a structured pathway for young people in the region to enter the maritime industry. As one of only a handful of such programmes in the UK, it enables learners aged 16 and over to gain foundational knowledge in marine engineering and maritime studies, setting them on a trajectory towards officer roles on superyachts, cruise liners, and major shipping companies.

With Pembrokeshire’s rich maritime heritage and its transition towards marine renewable energy, the programme aligns with emerging industry needs. The region is witnessing significant developments in offshore wind and tidal energy, creating new demand for skilled professionals. By equipping learners with essential competencies, the Pre-Cadetship supports this transition and strengthens Pembrokeshire’s position as a key player in the UK’s maritime sector.

Charlie, a standout learner from the Enhanced Marine Engineering Pre-Cadet programme, recently secured a Foundation Degree Deck Cadetship with UNITY SHIPPING, managed by Ship Safe Training Group (SSTG). His fully sponsored training programme at Warsash Maritime School will lead to an FdSc in Nautical Science and a UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Officer of the Watch certificate. Charlie’s journey highlights how the Pre-Cadetship acts as a crucial stepping stone to fully-fledged maritime careers.

Another success story is Osian, who has been awarded a fully sponsored Merchant Navy Marine Engineering Officer Cadetship with North Star Shipping. His training will be fully funded, allowing him to complete a Higher National Diploma (HND) at Warsash Maritime College.

“I am so grateful for the opportunity that Pembrokeshire college has given me. The Pre-Cadetship programme has given me the technical skills and the industry exposure needed to move to the next level.” Osian

Stakeholders in the maritime sector have also praised Pembrokeshire College’s efforts in preparing young professionals for the industry.

"For 65 years, maritime has been at the heart of Pembrokeshire’s economy, providing rewarding, well paid careers for thousands of people. In this time, the Port’s continued adaptation has facilitated the supply of energy to the rest of the UK and beyond – firstly from petroleum and more recently from gas – and we’re now entering a new era as we look to decarbonise and transition to a Net Zero future. Exciting opportunities lie ahead, and we’re delighted to partner with Pembrokeshire College as it supports our next generation workforce to develop the skills they’ll need to grab these opportunities with both hands.” Anna Malloy  (Stakeholder Engagement and Communications Manager at the Port of Milford Haven)
